Deadpool Was Almost A Father In Deadpool 2
Deadpool is a lot of things, from mercenary and chimichanga lover to fourth wall-breaker and unicorn... enthusiast. But one descriptor that's not usually associated with the Merc with the Mouth is father. Oh sure, there have been times when Wade Wilson has had to look after kids, but for most of his tenure in the comics, he didn't have one of his own, and it wasn't until a few years ago that Wade discovered he had a secret daughter. However, had the upcoming Deadpool 2 gone in a different creative direction, we would have reunited with Ryan Reynolds' Wade taking care of his own child years after the first movie. Reynolds explained:
The genesis of it was 'What if Deadpool had a child?' Like, what if we started five years later and what would that be like? By page 1.5, it was totally untenable. We were just like, 'Nope. Nope. No, no, no. This is never, ever going to work.' We went back to the drawing board and kind of reworked it in a way about wanting to have a child, which is something that so many people I know experience on a daily basis --- wanting to have a child but can't.
The "Dadpool" concept certainly sounds amusing and could have produced a lot of jokes, but the way Ryan Reynolds puts it, it sounds like he, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick just couldn't find a way to make the parent/child dynamic effectively work across an entire movie. Instead, when we see Wade Wilson and Vanessa in Deadpool 2, they've tried having their own child, but have been unsuccessful. However, while he won't have his own child to look after in Deadpool 2, Wade will be serving as a father figure for Julian Dennison's Russell, who's being hunted by Cable in the movie. To that end, Reynolds added to EW that as profane, raunchy and packed with violence as Deadpool 2 is (just like its predecessor), in its own weird way, it will also show the importance of family. As the actor stated:
The first movie is a love story masquerading as a comic-book movie, and this one is kind of a family film masquerading as a comic-book film again.
While it hasn't been revealed yet exactly why Cable wants to kill Russell in Deadpool 2, in order to protect the mutant kid, Deadpool will form the definitely derivative X-Force, whose members include Domino, Bedlam, Shatterstar, Zeitgeist and Peter (yes, that Peter). Even with Ryan Reynolds skeptical of Deadpool 3 happening, an X-Force movie is on the way, so assuming that Russell makes it out of Deadpool 2 alive, it's possible we could see he and Wade form a closer connection. Of course, I'd be remiss if I didn't remind you all that Deadpool isn't exactly the best role model to look up to.
Deadpool 2 hits theaters on May 18. As for what else this year has in store theatrically, check out our 2018 release schedule.

If there's one thing we can reveal about Deadpool 2 that doesn't qualify as a spoiler, it's this: the title character does not become a father. Given Wade Wilson's many R-rated preferences, this is probably for the best, but it wasn't for lack of trying. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly

Deadpool being a father doesn't seem that so farfetch as something for later. But for right now, they made a good decison in keeping Deadpool doing his shenanigans the way it was meant to be. Him wanting a family makes him human, and as much of a badass he is, he still has human emotions.
