The Fox News Movie Has Found Its Rupert Murdoch
Jay Roach, the director behind Austin Powers, Meet The Parents, and Trumbo, has never had difficulty assembling fantastic ensembles - and he's doing a bang-up job with his next project. He's already gotten John Lithgow, Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron, Margot Robbie, and Kate McKinnon to sign on for his upcoming movie about Roger Ailes and Fox News, and now a new report has revealed A Clockwork Orange star Malcolm McDowell is coming aboard to play Rupert Murdoch.
The news arrives from Variety, though there isn't specification about exactly what we can expect from Malcolm McDowell in the untitled feature. That being said, it should be a fairly big part given that Rupert Murdoch was not only the man who put Roger Ailes in charge of Fox News, but also was the one who fired him following multiple allegations of sexual misconduct.
Hailing from Australia, Rupert Murdoch is a media mogul who has long served as the Chairman and CEO of News Corp - which is the company that has owned Twentieth Century Fox since 1985. He began the Fox News Channel in 1996, and has actually been the acting CEO of the company ever since Roger Ailes was removed from the position in July 2016.
Based on a screenplay by Charles Randolph, the film will center on Roger Ailes (John Lithgow) and the extreme career fall he experienced a few years ago. Nicole Kidman and Charlize Theron will play Fox News anchors Gretchen Carlson and Megyn Kelly, respectively, which Margot Robbie's character will be a fictional creation - specifically an associate producer at the network.
Malcolm McDowell will surely always be remembered for his brilliant and unforgettable turn as Alex in Stanley Kubrick's masterful A Clockwork Orange - but the reality is that he's been consistently working in the 46 years since. Most recently he's been doing a lot of small screen work, including a lead role on the Amazon series Mozart In the Jungle, but he also acts in a lot of smaller movies as well.
Annapurna is the main production company behind the development of the movie, which no longer seems to be going by the title Fair and Balanced (which was the tagline for Fox News up until last summer). The project doesn't have a release date yet, but it's likely that this cast build-up means production is starting soon - which probably means that we will get to see the finished product in the second half of next year. Hell, if Adam McKay's Vice does well in its Christmas release spot, I wouldn't be surprised to see Jay Roach's film follow the model (both are Annapurna releases).
This is a project that is definitely developing into something exciting, just given all of the talent involved. Given that there are still some key players in the true story who haven't been cast yet, we expect this won't be the last actor announcement we hear, so stay tuned to CinemaBlend for all of the latest updates.

Rupert Murdoch and Ted Turner (founder and former owner of CNN) are long-standing rivals. In late 2003, Murdoch acquired a 34% stake in Hughes Electronics, the operator of the largest American satellite TV system, DirecTV, from General Motors for $6 billion (USD). His Fox movie studio would go on to have global hits with Titanic and Avatar.
