Turns Out The Rocks Hobbs Was Always Supposed To Get A Fast And Furious Spinoff
Considering Dwayne Johnson's massive success as an action hero, most recently seen this summer in both Rampage and Skyscraper, one would think that the actor wouldn't mind taking the sidelines as Hobbs in succeeding Fast and Furious movies. However, after the scene-stealing chemistry between his and Jason Statham's character, audiences will soon be seeing a spinoff of two in Hobbs in Shaw come 2019. Positioning the The Rock as one of the leads of yet another popular franchise isn't a matter of dumb luck for the actor though. Producer Hiram Garcia wanted to see Hobbs a part from the Fast and Furious films from the very beginning. In his words:
When I told you that we kind of created that Hobbs character for Fast Five, there was always this goal of if we do this right and audiences respond to Hobbs, like we're very fortunate that they did, we think that there's an opportunity to spin this character off. And after the several movies that we did, it felt like the time was right after Fate of the Furious, and people really responded to Dwayne and Jason's chemistry on screen and the fun that we started to find with them.
In an interview with Collider, Hiram Garcia discussed one of the highest paid actors in the world, as he's been collaborating with Dwayne Johnson for many years. Garcia has also had a hand in Johnson's recent big hit such as Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Rampage, Skyscraper, along with the upcoming Jungle Cruise. Johnson has quite the team behind him, with Garcia as one of the major players in the development of production of his high-profile projects (which are all of them aren't they?) A simple supporting role in Fast Five for Johnson was a strategic move for his career into creating a bigger part for the actor that would later turn into Hobbs and Shaw.
It wasn't until Jason Statham came along to the Fast and Furious franchise, that Hobbs found a place in a spinoff movie. The hilarious chemistry between the two characters who are always at odds with another is the perfect combination needed to stir up into the buddy-cop type movie Hobbs and Shaw will be, which might remind you a bit of Lethal Weapon. Directed by David Leitch, who recently helmed Atomic Blonde and Deadpool 2, according to Statham, the spinoff is going to be grittier, darker and more grounded than the Fast and Furious franchise.
Even supporting characters in an ensemble cast such as Fast and Furious are often carefully crafted in hopes of becoming larger characters in a series down the line and this definitely worked when it came to Hobbs and Shaw. The fact that super talented actors The Rock and Jason Statham play them also might have had something to do with it. The duo will start shooting Hobbs and Shaw right after Johnson wraps Jungle Cruise. The spinoff will come to theaters in summer 2019.
Wan explained the reason why he made this decision, "I wanted to keep the story to the world of Aquaman and not have to worry about what other characters are doing in their films and how that would affect us. I just thought the simplest way was to keep it clean — keep it simple and let it be an Aquaman story."
