Why Jude Laws Reported Captain Marvel Role Makes Perfect Sense For The Movie

At the beginning of the week, we were treated to a new Captain Marvel trailer packed with cool footage. Most of the preview delved into Carol Danvers' mysterious past with the Kree, part of which includes being mentored by Jude Law's character, the commander of Starforce. A couple days before the new trailer dropped, a leaked toy image identified Law's character as Yon-Rogg. While Marvel hasn't officially confirmed if this is true (that Pop! figure on Funko's website is now simply labeled 'Star Commander'), it would make perfect sense given Yon-Rogg's comic book background and what we can expect from Captain Marvel.

First off, it should noted that when Jude Law was first reported about being eyed for Captain Marvel, he was said to be playing Mar-Vell, Marvel Comics' original Captain Marvel. This would be fitting since Mar-Vell plays a key role in Carol Danvers' comic book origin story, as she gained her powers when the Kree Magnetron device that exploded merged her DNA with Mar-Vell's Kree DNA. The Captain Marvel movie wouldn't necessarily depict this event bear for beat, but as least it would make sense for him to be around as Carol gets her start in the MCU.

Alas, since that initial report came out, it's never been clarified whether or not Mar-Vell is appearing in Captain Marvel, let alone if Jude Law is playing him. Around the same time that Law's participation in Captain Marvel was revealed, a rumor surfaced that Yon-Rogg would be a player in the movie. However, it was initially believed that Ben Mendelsohn would be playing Yon-Rogg, and we've since learned that the actor is actually playing Talos, the Skrull leading an invasion on Earth.

Fast-forward to now, Jude Law is still staying tight-lipped about who he's playing in Captain Marvel, but back in September, here's what he had to say about his character:

He is driven by a belief in the divine leadership of the Kree people. So he's almost a devout warrior --- unquestioning, conservative, but inspirational.

This sounds similar to how Yon-Rogg is depicted in the comics. In the main Marvel universe, Yon-Rogg was a colonel in the Kree Imperial Army who veered onto the path of villainy due to his hatred towards Mar-Vell, jealous that the woman he loved, a medic named Una, had feelings for Mar-Vell instead. When Yon-Rogg his crew were sent to investigate Earth, Yon-Rogg left Mar-Vell on our world so that Una could be his, and he later sent a Kree Sentry to kill Mar-Vell. That plan failed, and thus began their long conflict with one another.

Eventually Yon-Rogg teamed up with Ronan the Accuser in an effort to overthrow the Kree empire's Supreme Intelligence, believing that their people were better off reverting to their warlike ways. Once again, Mar-Vell interfered, and it all culminated in the Psyche-Magnetron device that Yon-Rogg had brought into battle exploding. As a result, Carol Danvers was irradiated by the machine's energy and gained superpowers, Yon-Rogg was believed to have died. He later resurfaced alive and with his own set of powers, but that's another story.

If Mar-Vell isn't appearing in Captain Marvel, then obviously the Yon-Rogg we might be seeing on the big screen wouldn't be a close adaptation of his comic book predecessor. However, going off of Jude Law's description, one can imagine the MCU's Yon-Rogg as being fiercely dedicated to the Kree empire. But because of his conservative outlook, he also believes that the Kree are superior to all other alien species, so you can imagine he'd be upset if there's ever a situation where the Kree look weak in his eyes.

Jude Law also mentioned that his character sees Carol Danvers' (or as she's known among the Kree, Vers) powers as a "blessing" and something she has to learn how to control, which is why he's training her. How do you think he'll react when Carol abandons the Kree empire upon learning about her old life on Earth. The Skrulls may be the main villains in Captain Marvel, but you can bet that if Carol in any way interferes with the Kree coming out victorious against their shapeshifting adversaries, Yon-Rogg will do everything in his power to neutralize her, resulting in him being more reminiscent of how he's depicted on the printed page.

Yon-Rogg's inclusion in Captain Marvel could also help pave the way for another character's turn to villainy. One of Carol's fellow Starforce members is Lee Pace's Ronan the Accuser, who we watched in Guardians of the Galaxy try to destroy Xandar because he didn't recognize the peace treaty between his people and the Xandarians. Ronan was declared a "radical" and "zealot," but what set him on that path?

Maybe Ronan's obsession with the ancient laws came from his time with Yon-Rogg, or maybe he already held those beliefs and simply found a kindred spirit in Yon-Rogg, which led to him being recruited to Starforce. Either way, if Yon-Rogg is defeated/killed during Captain Marvel, that could be the event that pushes Ronan to radicalism, and once the Kree/Xandar treaty is signed years later, then he becomes a full-blown terrorist. So not only would Yon-Rogg's inclusion provide another challenge for Carol Danvers, it would also indirectly set the stage for the Guardians of the Galaxy's first mission together.

As one comes to expect with any Marvel movie, there are a lot of unanswered questions about Captain Marvel, and who knows whether the identity of Jude Law's character will be revealed in later marketing or saved for the movie itself. Still, it's looking more likely that Mar-Vell will not have any role to play in Captain Marvel, meaning that Yon-Rogg is not only the next best candidate, he also arguably fits better within the story that's being told.

All The Reasons Why Black Widow Absolutely Deserves Her Own Movie

As development on Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow movie continues to inch forward, some MCU fans may be wondering why it's even a thing. Of the Avengers who still have yet to get their own standalone movie, why is Black Widow at the top of the minds of so many people? She doesn't even have superpowers, and it's not like Avengers: Endgame set the stage for some big feature on her end. There was once a time a solo movie would've been perfect for the character, but has that time passed?

The answer, in short, is absolutely not. There's plenty that's been written on this topic already, but as more details on the Black Widow movie have come to light, it's high time for us to talk about all the reasons Black Widow absolutely deserves her own movie, starting with why the character is so fabulous.

Black Widow Is Lowkey The Greatest Hero In Avengers: EndgameAvengers: Endgame is jam-packed with big moments for its heroes, which makes it really easy to forget why they all came together in the first place. While Tony was pouting and Cap was attending support groups, Natasha stepped up as the leader of The Avengers and did all she could to continue to keep tabs on all the world's heroes and ensure those left behind were still safe from tyranny.

Plus, let's not forget that her massive sacrifice that gave the Avengers a shot at defeating Thanos and bringing everyone back from the dead. It was all the more noble, considering she forced Clint Barton to live so he could be with his family, and gave her life knowing there's a solid chance she may never know whether or not the mission succeeded or failed.

She Can Hold Her Own Alongside Almost Any HeroBlack Widow is one of the only Avengers who lacks super powers or special gear, and yet she's always in the thick of it with everyone else. She's firing shots, doing cartwheels, and taking down bad guys all with a minimal armor and little fear. She's been the ultimate sidekick to accompany any hero in the MCU, so why can't she take the lead for once?

After all, a Black Widow movie doesn't have to be devoid of other Marvel heroes. Natasha could pair up with just about anyone, and somehow still find a way to make herself useful even amongst the strongest of allies. Personally, I think it would be great to see a Black Widow movie where she and old-school Hulk teamed up on some S.H.I.E.L.D. mission, although given the big gap in Hulk's time on Earth that may not be a realistic dream. But there are plenty of routes to go in.

Black Widow's A Hero, But Also Stone Cold When NecessaryWhile they typically tend to stray on the side of what's right and protects the innocent, the MCU's superheroes have a bit of grey area when it comes to taking down enemies that threaten the things they love. Like, are we really supposed to believe that when Thor slams down in the middle of those enemies every single one of them was conveniently knocked unconscious and just never got back up?

Let's also remember that Natasha was a straight-up assassin, and while she's not necessarily the high-profile killer she once was, she's more or less shown to have little remorse or second thoughts in bringing down a target if things come down to it. This makes a Black Widow movie a potentially darker affair than it would be for other core members of the Avengers, which makes the prospect of one all the more exciting.

There Are Parts Of Black Widow's Past That Are Still UnexploredWe've seen glimpses of Black Widow's past in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but beyond that, there are huge gaps in her history that are unexplored. We don't know the full story behind her road to S.H.I.E.L.D., what she did when she was apart from The Avengers, and next to nothing about what happened in Budapest. Could a Black Widow movie with Scarlett Johansson front and center provide any of those answers?

It's possible, although there's a rumor floating around Twitter that Sebastian Stan mentioned the upcoming Black Widow movie takes place after Captain America: Civil War. If that's true, it will be an interesting time as the movie showed her to be one of the heroes torn between Tony Stark and Steve Rodgers. A film like this isn't exactly what audiences may be expecting, but arguably better than an origin story where we see her do some horrible things.

There's Still A Chance Black Widow May Return To The MCUNow, it was said in Avengers: Endgame that Black Widow couldn't come back, but there's no denying the movie also proved that's not the case. After all, Gamora was originally sacrificed for the Soul Stone, but had a past version of herself pulled into the present. It stands to reason the MCU could pull something similar with Black Widow, and have zero impact on the timeline in doing so.

So while the MCU ponders whether or not it will bring back Natasha Romanoff, a Black Widow movie would be a good measuring stick to see how big of a priority it is for fans to see her again. Expanding out her mythology, and perhaps giving her a grounded background to thrive in would give her somewhere to go other than ensemble films if she returns, which may not be as feasible with the MCU geared to go more cosmic.

Fans Still Haven't Seen How Natasha Became Black WidowNow, it's more than fair to say superhero movie fans are growing increasingly tired of origin movies, but it's certainly worth considering in the case of Natasha Romanoff. Her origin is fairly darker than most other Marvel heroes, which would make the tale of her journey from KGB assassin to S.H.I.E.L.D. operative a bit more interesting than the average origin story in the realm of superhero content.

Now that she's become a vital part of MCU lore, it's time we put some respect on Black Widow's name and honor her with a true standalone movie. Especially since Scarlett Johansson has been the trooper and showed up in most of the Marvel ensemble films in a supporting role. It's about high time she gets to sit in the driver's seat and show MCU fans why she's not to be overlooked.

As far as when the world may get to see Scarlett Johansson star in a Black Widow movie, we're still in the dark, although rumors have stated production is slated to start in June or it's possibly already underway. Even Captain Marvel's Brie Larson Can't Resist Teasing Mark Ruffalo About Spoiling Movies

Unlike their comic book counterparts, most of the heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe don't really have secret identities. That's probably for the best, because even the actors playing them can't manage to keep a secret, most notably Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo. The MCU's newest hero, Captain Marvel actress Brie Larson, is well aware of the loose-lipped nature of her co-stars and couldn't resist teasing the Hulk actor about it. Check it out:

She may be new to this whole superhero thing, but Brie Larson figures that if her tweet showing her magazine cover is a spoiler, at least she'll be in good company. It is a good-natured but hilarious jab at the Bruce Banner actor who has more than earned his reputation as a spoiler during his time in the MCU. She even @s Mark Ruffalo on Twitter, as if to remind him of his missteps.

Everyone teases the young Tom Holland (ironically the only actor whose character has a major secret identity) for the amount of beans he has spilled, so it's only fair Mark Ruffalo gets called out for his spoilers -- and Brie Larson couldn't resist. Her first onscreen appearance in the MCU is still a month and a half away but Brie Larson is already fitting right in with her superpowered cohorts.

Hopefully this tweet will keep secrecy at the forefront of Mark Ruffalo's mind as we race towards the release of Avengers: Endgame and he won't accidentally spoil something or livestream the movie. Maybe Brie Larson can be the person on the press tour who babysits the Hulk actor to make sure he doesn't let the cat out of the bag; Don Cheadle certainly doesn't want the job.

It sounds like Mark Ruffalo and Brie Larson may have a chance to discuss the latter's jokes onscreen too, considering that we've heard that they share a scene together in Endgame. Can Captain Marvel outmuscle the Hulk? Time will tell.

Although Brie Larson joked that she'll be the Mark Ruffalo of 2019, the actress has actually made a concerted effort to do quite the opposite. She is seemingly determined not to have a mortifying slip-up and is endeavoring to keep the secrets she knows hidden until after the films are released and everyone can discuss them.

Like the rest of the MCU actors, Brie Larson knows a lot of secrets too. We'll see how well she can keep them and how well her strategy of erasing her mind works in the lead up to Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame, where she will be asked many prying questions looking for a Ruffalo-esque slip.
