MoviePass Is Offering More Movies, But Still Not The Most Popular

With an uptick in movie theater attendance this summer as the season delivered a strong line-up for audiences, Moviepass subscribers have been through quite the wringer. When the service premiered, it had good intentions to allow its customers to spend one monthly fee to go to the theaters multiple times, but in recent months, cracks in the service have apparent. Even after the app shut off briefly last month, affecting many of its subscribers because the service needed to borrow $5 million to make necessary payments to stay afloat, Moviepass still maintains that it's still doing just fine. It's recently made some changes to their service plan, but the coming week's selections still has popular movies not readily available for users every day of the week.

With a look at this week's Moviepass offerings, the service has increased from six to nine selections per day, contrary to their August 16 announcement that stated that options would be limited to six per day. Rom-com hit Crazy Rich Asians, for example, is present on the list, but only for Thursday and this upcoming Tuesday. Box office winner The Meg is only available on Wednesday this week. Mile 22, starring Mark Wahlberg, is also limited for Moviepass subscribers, showing up on the selection on Thursday and Wednesday. New release, The Happytime Murders will be available throughout the weekend from Thursday until Monday, though the film is not expected to be popular among audiences, per tracking.

Notably missing from this week's list is Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Christopher Robin and BlacKkKlansman. Mission: Impossible came out to great acclaim from audiences and critics, though Moviepass users were surprised that the service made it unable to see the film at all. When Christopher Robin and The Meg were released, Moviepass decided not to offer these titles in an effort to break even from their previous losses, with the rule that some new releases would be blacked-out for the first two weeks of release. Both of these films have been out for longer than two weeks, and The Meg is only barely available to subscribers.

After suffering losses, while Moviepass originally decided it would increase their prices to $14.95 a month, it decided on a new plan that lowered the price back down to $9.95. This limited subscribers to three views a month, with discounts of up to $5 on any additional tickets. The company also said it would offer "many major studio first-run films," with "many" being the keyword here, not "all." It should also be noted that even though the movies are available on the app, there is often limited theaters where one can use the service.

With the addition of nine selections instead of six, perhaps fans of indie films can rejoice as new releases such as We the Animals, Papillon, The Miseducation of Cameron Post, Skate Kitchen and Juliet, Naked are up for grabs almost every day of the week. All frustrations aside, the service does allow subscribers to save money even if its business plan isn't perfect.

The Earliest Twilight Script Was Crazy Different, According To Catherine Hardwicke

Mention the word Twilight, and the image of pale yet glittery vampires with a Pacific Northwest backdrop immediately comes to mind. But if the studio originally got its way, the word "Twilight" might have conjured images of Jet skis, CIA agents and an all-star athlete named Bella. Wait, what? Original Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke recently explained to CinemaBlend:

The [initial] script that I read had gone through the whole development process at MTV and Paramount. And you get all these notes -- nobody's fault or anything -- but you get notes, and you try this, you try this. So it had veered very far from the book, and so I did not like it at all. And no studio wanted to make it. And so Paramount put it into it turnaround.[Bella] was a track star in the first scene, not an every-girl kind of awkward and clumsy [kid]... she was like a bad ass, and then it escalated into this whole thing where there were CIA agents on jet skis trying to find the vampires, you know. It really went, 'Whooooo!' She was not working for the CIA, but it was a different movie.

This sounds something more in line with the Charlie's Angels reboot that Kristen Stewart currently is filming, and not at all in line with Twilight, the story of a shy and reserved teenage girl named Bella who finds her voice in a relationship with a vampire, Edward. And certainly not in line with what Twilight author Stephenie Meyer conceived in her initial book.

Published in 2005, Twilight introduced readers to the star-crossed couple of Bella and Edward, soul mates destined to met even though she was a timid high schooler and he was a 104-year-old vampire. The series, over the years, has sold more than 120 million copies, proving that Meyer's vision for this passionate romance had support.

What would that fan base have thought if the drastic changes made to the Twilight concept had remained in the initial script? Likely, there would have been riots, and instant rejection of the feature-film adaptation. And that would have instantly unplugged a five-movie franchise that eventually totaled a whopping $3.3 billion in global ticket sales.

This can all be traced back to Catherine Hardwicke, who stood firm and fought to return the script for the original Twilight to the roots of Stephenie Meyer's novel. During our exclusive chat, she told CinemaBlend:

When I read the book, I said, let's go to the heart of why people love his book, you know? It's this romantic, crazy, out of control, you know, the first time you fell in love, stupid passion that you have for somebody that's totally wrong, but she doesn't give a shit! And that's what makes us alive. Let's find that life force, where you will do reckless, crazy things because you know, you're somebody. So that's what I wanted in there. So we got rid of the jet skis. [laughs]

That was the right decision. Twilight connected with a massive audience, leading into numerous sequels including Twilight: New Moon and a two part Breaking Dawn. When did Catherine Hardwicke realize that she had touched a nerve? She tells CinemaBlend that it happened on opening weekend, as she recalls the reaction of the audience, and of a famous fan. Said Hardwicke:

I just heard from Eli Roth, because I'm working on a project with him, that Quentin Tarantino, on camera, said in an interview that Twilight made him feel like he was like a 13 year old girl, and that he loved it. That is awesome. That's kind of funny and hilarious. And that's exactly what I was trying to do. ...Opening night, I was in Austin [on opening weekend] at the Ale house and they were like, 'Oh yeah, just pop in to the different screenings.' And so I started to pop into one, and then I was mobbed. I mean, I'm not even an actor. I'm like, 'Why am I being mobbed?' A girl fainted in my arms, that I was there. I was like, 'Oh Gosh. Oh Wow. Okay. This is a big deal!'

And it continues to be a big deal. We spoke with Catherine Hardwicke as Twilight was returning to theaters in celebration of its 10th anniversary. As such, Twilight will play in more than 450 movie theaters nationwide Sunday, October 21, and Tuesday, October 23, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. (local time). William Shatner will always be best known as a television legend, who was the first of many Star Trek captains when the original television series made a cultural impact on viewers, and the science fiction genre, in the late '60s. A lot of surprising new information about Shatner has still slipped through the cracks, despite the many interviews and countless books he has written in the past. His new memoir is no exception, as the actor reveals that he and Leonard Nimoy weren't close at the very end of his life, that he once did mushrooms in Amsterdam with his wife because he always loved Alice in Wonderland, and also admitted that directing Star Trek V: The Final Frontier wasn't a particularly good decision. Here's what he said:

I had a choice. I could accept the compromise or refuse to direct the movie. I made a mistake; I accepted the compromise, which doomed the picture from the beginning.

His words come from his new memoir, Live Long and... What I Might Have Learned Along the Way (via TrekMovie.com), which is hitting store shelves on September 4. Star Trek V was the first and only Star Trek film William Shatner directed for a reason, I guess. When his original story idea for the installment wasn't given the mark of approval by series creator Gene Roddenberry, they had to creatively compromise, which produced less than exceptional results. Star Trek V: Final Frontier opened in 1989 to the lowest numbers of the film series, with $52 million (when adjusted for inflation), according to Box Office Mojo. The much more successful film before it, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, received much higher acclaim and $109 million (with inflation) upon opening.

While William Shatner recently showed his support to fellow captain, Patrick Stewart, who will soon be reprising his role as Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation, the actor has distanced himself from the franchise in recent years and has shown a bit of weariness with the franchise. When asked about what Star Trek character he would play if not Kirk, Shatner answered he'd be willing to play a Red Shirt, because they die quick and the actors are on to the next job. Shatner was also critical of his friend Leonard Nimoy's appearance in the 2009 Star Trek reboot, and said the actor played a useless role, while he also recently admitted that he would not be interested in reprising his role of Captain Kirk.

It's difficult to understand the toll it can play on a person who has been known for an iconic character his entire life, especially with Trekkies being such devoted fans. William Shatner has been invested in and attached to the Star Trek franchise since it's over 50-year-old history began, so some regrets are sure to be among his many accomplishments and accolades. And, while it's unfortunate that directing Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is among those regrets for Shatner, at least he seemed to have learned from his mistake.

Would Hugh Jackman Make The Greatest Showman 2? Here's What He Says

The Greatest Showman was a massive success, so of course, people want to know if we could get a sequel. While the movie may not have necessarily lent itself to an obvious follow-up, that doesn't mean it could never happen. In fact, Hugh Jackman says that he loved making the first one so much he would absolutely be on board for a sequel if it felt like the right thing to do. According to Jackman...

If a genuine opportunity came up where it felt like the right thing to do, then yep, I'd get the top hat back out. It's clear to me and to everyone that people love these characters. I loved this movie, I loved this character and it was one of the great joys of my life.

While Hugh Jackman doesn't elaborate on what "right thing to do" means exactly, we can probably safely assume he's talking about a good script with a story worth telling. The story of The Greatest Showman follows Jackman as P.T. Barnum through most of his life, and ends with him seemingly leaving the circus life behind, more or less, so it would appear that the story was complete, but if somebody found a reason to make a sequel, Jackman would certainly listen to the pitch.

And if we're being blunt, it's not like The Greatest Showman was a particularly historically accurate movie, so there's really no reason a sequel can't contrive a reason to get P.T. Barnum back under the big top one more time.

It's not too shocking that people would be curious about a potential sequel to The Greatest Showman. The film grossed over $400 million at the box office despite never finishing a weekend in higher than third place. The soundtrack was also a massive hit, outselling every other album last year by a huge margin.

Hugh Jackman does point out to BBC Radio Five Live that there is one potentially large hurdle to any talk of a sequel. The original Greatest Showman was a 20th Century Fox movie which means that the film is now, or shortly will be, the property of Disney. This means that there's going to be a fair amount of work to be done on the business side of things before any consideration of a sequel could really be made.

Having said it, it certainly feels like The Greatest Showman is something that would fit perfectly within the Disney family. It's family friendly. It's a musical. It's got songs that get stuck in your head. It made giant piles of money. Everything about that just screams Disney. I feel like the studio would be all for a sequel.

Time will tell whether a sequel actually happens. Once the Disney and Fox merger is complete and all the details are worked out you can be sure Disney will be looking at every film that's been acquired to see what the new company can do with it, so maybe a sequel isn't that crazy an idea after all.
