Netflix's Murder Mystery Trailer Reunites Adam Sandler And Jennifer Aniston

Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston were last seen in a movie together in 2011s romantic comedy Just Go With It. In that film, their characters got caught up in a web of lies while pretending to be married. It's a tough act to be sure, but nothing like what they will have to deal with in Murder Mystery. Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston reunite for the Netflix action-comedy, which has just dropped its first trailer. Check it out below:

First, it must be said that I didnt know we needed Adam Sandler with a ridiculous cop mustache, but Im here for it. Although weve only seen them together in one other movie, the Murder Mystery trailer reminds us that Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler have good chemistry and a fun dynamic. Here Aniston plays the frustrated wife completely exhausted with her husband, and him as the perpetually disappointing spouse who puts in the absolute minimum amount of effort ("The boat does all the work").

They are taking their honeymoon 15 years late to try and find a spark in their listless marriage, only for that spark to come in the form of the films titular murder mystery. And while theyre in over their heads, perhaps his detective skills and her love of mystery novels will see them through and provide more than a few laughs along the way.

The premise of Murder Mystery is nothing new; whodunits are tried and true, and thats because they are effective. Here, after an offer to spend the weekend on a luxury yacht so generous some might call it suspicious, Nick and Audrey Spitz wind up being framed for a murder of a billionaire. But rather than confine the film entirely to the yacht as the true killer is rooted out, Murder Mystery takes the characters on the run, bringing some action to the proceedings.

That action provides some of the trailers funnier moments. The part where we see that Adam Sandlers detective is missing horribly while firing at a would-be assassin and getting yelled at by his wife for it is great. He clearly trained at the Stormtrooper School of Marksmanship. Also, between this and the new trailer for Men in Black: International, its a good week for right-hand drive car humor.

Murder Mystery also seems to be doing a light bit of satire of the whodunit premise. The inspector is your classic European detective you find in these kinds of stories, a Hercule Poirot-type character who is both brilliant and ridiculous. Adam Sandlers Nick even yells out his Magnum P.I. fantasy while racing to a get in a Ferrari and escape their pursuers.

I dont think its unfair to say that some of Adam Sandlers movies in recent years have been not great. You might even call some stinkers or a Devlin, as Jennifer Anistons character in Just Go With It would say. But Murder Mystery looks like a lot of fun. Its got a solid premise and while its obviously still a comedy, it doesnt look as inane and full of hijinks as something like The Ridiculous 6.

How Much Alita: Battle Angel Has Already Made Overseas

At present, box office prognostications for Alita: Battle Angel don't look fantastic. Early estimates have suggested it won't do big business in its opening weekend, and while its Rotten Tomatoes score has been rising since the embargo first lifted, it's still getting a mostly middling response. We won't fully know how things will turn out until Sunday morning, but at the very least the film is padding its numbers with a fast start internationally.

While Alita: Battle Angel isn't out in American theaters yet, is has been given an early release over in Asia, where it has already made $32 million - according to Box Office Mojo. Fox hoped that it would get a boost in the region thanks to A) the origins of the source material, and B) the recent Chinese New Year holiday, and while the movie won't actually be out in China until later this month, it's already picked up a nice chunk of change. The movie is now out in 11 markets in Asia, and it's been particularly successful in Korea.

It's been suggested that Alita: Battle Angel might end up making less than $25 million during its five-day Valentine's Day weekend release domestically, and that would certainly be a disappointment for the feature. Not only has it been in the works for nearly 20 years, but it's been finished with principal photography since early 2017. It's been estimated that the budget is somewhere in the $150-200 million range, and a soft opening in America would be a serious blemish. Fortunately, an impressive overseas showing may prevent it from being regarded in hindsight as a flop.

It's true that $32 million might not seem like much in the grand scheme, but it's possible that Alita: Battle Angel will wind up making some seriously big numbers in foreign markets. James Cameron, who wrote and produced the film, has a huge following in China, with both Avatar ($204.1 million) and Titanic ($43.9 million) being massive successes during their theatrical releases, and there is a history of splashy action movies doing better abroad than at home. This could easily be one of those cases.

Based on Yukito Kishiro's manga series, Gunnm, and directed by Robert Rodriguez, Alita: Battle Angel is set in the year 2563 in a post-apocalyptic society - specifically a metropolis called Iron City. The story begins as a scientist named Dr. Dyson Ido (Christoph Waltz) discovers the body of a cyborg in a junk heap while searching for scraps for his work. Ido is successfully able to bring her back to life, naming her Alita (Rosa Salazar), and she not only begins to adjust to her new life, but slowly starts to remember who she was before her resurrection.
