What The Hulk Is Wrong With Bruce Banner In Avengers: Infinity War?

Last year's Thor: Ragnarok was the first Marvel film to feature more Hulk than Bruce Banner -- but Avengers: Infinity War very much flips that ratio back. The green monster makes a very exciting appearance in the first scene of the movie, immediately jumping into a fist fight with Thanos, but after getting his ass whupped he totally disappears. More than that, the angry giant repeatedly refuses to "come out" when his presence is requested which naturally makes us ask the question: what the hell is wrong with him?

We only saw the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of Hulk in four movies prior to Avengers: Infinity War (The Incredible Hulk, The Avengers, The Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Thor: Ragnarok), and while that's not as much exposure as a lot of other heroes we have learned a bit about him. Specifically, we know that he is definitely not one to shy away from a fight. Let's not forget that he tried to take on a fully-powered Surtur the last time we saw him. He typically comes out swinging at every opportunity he gets -- partially because he feels caged by Bruce Banner -- but mostly because he loves showing off his strength. Of course, that being said, it's extremely easy to be brave when you believe yourself to be the strongest entity in the universe.

The problem seems to be that Hulk encounters some serious self-esteem and confidence issues at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War. He was undefeated before going toe-to-toe with Thanos, and that streak ended in a bad way. Now the previously un-thinking monster is second guessing himself, and isn't even willing to show his face. The good news is that Bruce can still operate the Hulkbuster armor and be useful in the Battle for Wakanda, but clearly they have some interpersonal issues to work out.

What makes this development particularly interesting is when you look at it in the context of something Mark Ruffalo told me last year during the Thor: Ragnarok press day. At the time, he explained that he had had a meeting with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige to discuss the future of the Hulk. The result of that conversation was establishing a specific three-part arc that would play out across Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers 4 -- and knowing what we now know, we should be in for some fantastic developments next summer.

Let's look at things from a macro perspective. Thor: Ragnarok was the film that let Hulk be in charge, and because of the strength he grew it nearly destroyed Bruce Banner. In Avengers: Infinity War, Bruce finds himself back at the stick -- but more importantly after a lifetime of wishing the rage monster would go away, he needs the green guy to show up, and he doesn't. Keeping that in mind, it feels like the natural arc to play out for the dual personality character in Avengers 4 would be a version of cooperation. For the first time ever, we may get to see the strength of Hulk operate with the brilliant intelligence of Bruce Banner.

This is all speculation for now, but the fact that Bruce Banner survives the devastating finale of Avengers: Infinity War keeps the door open to this idea. We'll have to wait and see if it turns out to be true, but for now hit the comments section below to tell us what you think is wrong with Hulk throughout the new Marvel blockbuster.

28 Months Later? Here's What Alex Garland Says

In 2002, Danny Boyle and Alex Garland turned the zombie genre on its head with 28 Days Later, a film that took the concept of a post-apocalyptic viral outbreak and turned the adrenaline up with the deadly Rage Virus. The franchise continued in 2007 with Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's 28 Weeks Later, and that film left many wondering if and when a third installment would finally debut. There's quite a bit of enthusiasm for the series to become a trilogy (at least), but Garland recently took part in a Reddit AMA session and admitted that it probably won't happen. When asked by fans if there's a plan for another movie, Garland wrote:

Kind of, but doubt it will ever happen.

So if you are one of the many fans who has looked forward to the possibility of a third installment in the 28 Days Later franchise, then it sounds like you might not want to get your hopes up about it. Alex Garland knows of a tentative plan to do a third movie in this world (which many fans assumed might be called 28 Months Later), but now he's doubtful that it's going to happen. Like the insanely-strong infected at the end of the first movie, enough time passed, and it eventually wasted away.

The interesting thing to note about Alex Garland's response during that Reddit AMA session is the fact that there was "kind of" a plan in place to continue the franchise beyond the events of 28 Weeks Later. It wasn't just a theory, or a hypothetical story dreamed up by fans; it was real at one point. As fans will likely recall, the film ended with the Rage Virus making its way across the English Channel and into France, naturally setting up another movie in a new environment.

With that cliffhanger (we still don't know what happened to any of the surviving characters in 28 Weeks Later) tease in mind, there's room to continue expanding and try new things with this world. Alas, based on Alex Garland's assessment of the franchise, it seems more likely that imagery of the infected racing towards the Eiffel Tower provided the final punctuation for the series. Pretty bleak, right?

Despite the fact that it sounds like we probably won't get another entry in the 28 Days Later series, there's still plenty to be excited about within Alex Garland's filmography. On the heels of his recent directorial debut with Ex Machina (which went on to become a critical darling in its own right), the writer-director will soon debut his latest film, Annihilation, on February 23. Annihilation has already received strong critical buzz, so even without another installment in the pseudo zombie franchise, there's enough material here to keep genre fans intrigued for the foreseeable future.

Those hoping to see 28 Months Later one day have had their hopes dashed, after Alex Garland stated that he does not believe a further 28 Days Later sequel will ever happen. In Jason Reitman's Tully, Ron Livingston plays a challenging role. Drew, the husband of Charlize Theron's Marlo, is the father of three children, but leaves most of the parenting to his wife while he works and frequently travels on business. This might immediately paint him as an absentee dad, but the movie works to compensate for it by adding scenes of him pitching in - for example, helping his kids with their homework. The funny thing is, that scene was actually a late addition to the movie, because apparently test audiences initially reacted negatively to the character.

Earlier this month I sat down with Ron Livingston and co-star Mark Duplass at the Los Angeles press day for Tully, and bulk of our conversation surrounded the ways their individual roles depart from being architypes. In the case of Drew, I noted in my question that the movie shows him helping out and contributing, but Livingston revealed that wasn't always the case. While he didn't exactly get into it at length, he suggested that there were some reshoots after early screenings that helped his character's image a bit.

Drew definitely isn't ultimately depicted as a bad dad or even necessarily a bad husband in Tully, but he is a bit tuned out to everything that's going on even while actively making an effort. Describing Drew's role as a parent in Tully, Ron Livingston told me about a conversation that he had with Jason Reitman about the character, and used an analogy to try and get his impression across:

I had a conversation with Jason where I was like, 'Okay, so there's the [personal assistant] who is ignoring his walkie; there's the P.A. who has a dead battery and didn't check; and I want Drew to be the P.A. who is eagerly listening, but he's on the wrong channel.'

This introduces Marlo to Tully (Mackenzie Davis), an ambitious, philosophical young woman who slowly begins to reshape the way Marlo looks at her life.
